Find a Partner
Married couples — or people in a committed relationship — are three times more likely to be happy that divorced, single or widowed people.
Buy or adopt a dog
Dog owners report higher self-esteem, lower stress levels and higher levels of overall well-being. A dog creates an environment of acceptance and calm. Many dogs also require daily walks, which provides a reliable nudge to make sure it’s own gets a walk too.
Own only one TV
Worldwide studies show that TV-watching does bring some happiness but only if you limit your time to 30-60 minutes a day. We recommend that you own only one TV, put it in an out-of-the-way place in your home and ideally behind doors, such as in a cabinet. The idea is to make TV and intentional activity, not a reflexive one.
Favor Face-to-Face
Favor Face-to-Face interactions over electronic ones — Some time on your Facebook account is fine but not to the exclusion of real human contact. Join a club, commit to volunteer, establish a weekly happy hour. The point is to create a weekly ”nudges” that help you get more face time and less Facebook time.
Sleep at least 7 Hours
Sleep at least 7 Hours — Research from Psychologist shows that you need 7.5 – 9 hours of sleep a day to maximize your well-being. If you’re sleeping less than 6 hours, you may be up to 30% less happy than you could be. Optimize your bedroom for sleeping by relieving it of clutter, lowering the thermostat to 62 degrees, eliminating all light sources and banning all TV or computer screens.
Join a Faith
Worldwide, religious people report higher levels of well-being and live 4-14 years longer than people don’t belong to a faith-based community. If you grew up with a faith, try going back to your place of worship. If your beliefs have changed, commit to try to visit three new faith communities in the next three months.
Eat local
It seems that the health is improved by eating what the region provides you as much as you can.
